Sylvester & Maley, Inc.

Sylvester & Maley was founded in Burlington, Vermont in 1975 for the express purpose of representing injured victims and their families. Since that time, we have successfully handled personal injury cases of local and national significance in a number of areas, including automobile accidents, defective products, medical malpractice, recreational facilities, dram shop, and sexual abuse.

Every member of our firm has extensive involvement in successfully handling a wide range of cases, from the non-catastrophic to cases ranging from $1 million up to $5.4 million. Recently, the firm has achieved outstanding results for our clients. John and Chris Maley settled, just prior to closing arguments, a United States District Court personal injury motor vehicle accident suit for $2,925,000.00. Alan Sylvester, Michael Brow, and Amy Sylvester obtained a jury verdict in a wrongful death case in the United States District Court for $2,522,193.00. The largest verdict in the history of the state for this type of case. In addition, Alan and Chris settled a Wrongful Death claim for $5,400,000.00.

Alan Sylvester

Alan has been representing injured claimants and their families since 1964, and is a founding partner in the law firm of Sylvester and Maley.

Alan has been a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers since 1982. He has been recognized by his peers as one of the top trial lawyers in the State for the past 3 decades. He is one of only 1880 lawyers in the United States that has been listed in Best Lawyers in America throughout the twenty years since its first publication in 1983. He has served as President of the Vermont Trial Lawyer's Association, and as a member of its Board of Governors.

He has represented several clients in cases of national significance.

John Maley

John is a native of Burlington, Vermont and has been in private practice since 1968. He is a founding partner of Sylvester and Maley.

In 1999, John was inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers. He served as president of the Chittenden County Bar Association (1985 -- 1986) , as a member of the Board of Governors of the Vermont Trial Lawyers Association (1989 -- 1992) and a member of the Judicial Nominating Board for the State of Vermont. (1993 -- 1997) Because of his involvement in representing those injured by medical malpractice , John is a member of the Birth Trauma and Medical Negligence Groups of the American Trial Lawyers Association.

John graduated from the University of Vermont in 1965 and the University of Maine School of Law in 1968. He was admitted to the Vermont Bar in 1968, the U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont in 1968 and the U.S. Court of Appeals, Second Circuit, in 1973.

Christopher Maley

Chris was born in Burlington, Vermont. He graduated cum laude from both St. Lawrence University in 1993 and from Suffolk University Law School in 1996. At Suffolk, he was a recipient of an American Jurisprudence Award and was a member and an editor of the Transnational Law Review. Chris was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar in 1996 and practiced in Boston for six years primarily in the area of medical malpractice before being admitted in Vermont in 2002. Chris was also admitted to the U. S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in 1997.
