The term 'brain' is typically used in connection with vertebrate nervous systems, and less often with regard to the nervous system of invertebrates. In the latter, neural control is performed by collections of ganglia. The brain is an extremely complex organ: the human brain is a collection of 100 billion neurons, each linked with up to 25,000 others. This huge number of interconnecting neurons, often referred to as a neural ensemble, is what makes the brain intelligent—enabling humans to analyze sensory signals, control the body, and think. In most animals, the brain is located in the head, close to the primary sensory apparatus and the mouth.
