Plaintiff was issued an individual health insurance policy by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi (BC/BS) and made a series of claims which totaled approximately $4000. BC/BS denied payment, claiming the claims were made for treatment of a pre-existing condition. Plaintiff sued BC/BS, claiming that she had only complained of "recurrent pelvic pain" prior to her policy period, and had not presented symptoms from which a physician could diagnose any illness.
BC/BS settled shortly after filing suit for $11,500 - an amount which almost tripled the outstanding medical bills.
